Our Mission
Ecofutures Building makes zero net energy homes accessible not only to private clients but also to professionals and the public for educational and motivational purposes. By proving that homes for all income levels can be built to produce more energy than they use, Ecofutures has set precedents that challenge the housing industry to move toward carbon neutrality – now. No matter the cost or availability of fossil fuels, Ecofutures homes are future-proofed and built for the 21st century while delivering the universal benefits of comfort, health, durability and value.
Our History
Boulder native Eric Doub founded Ecofutures, Inc. in 1993. Now, with numerous awards, Ecofutures has carved out a rapidly growing niche among the green building cognoscenti in Colorado.
While pursuing a major in energy studies at Stanford University in the early 80’s, Eric took a few years away from the academic world to gain hands-on experience in active and passive solar, energy efficient home building, and general remodeling. With this field experience under his belt, he returned to Stanford with a desire to finish his undergraduate degree, and completed his unique, and self-titled major “Sustainable U.S. Resource and Security Policies.” That foundation of analysis—of present environmental trends and future possibilities in domestic resource use provided the motivation to pursue residential general contracting back home in Boulder, with an emphasis on ecologically-sound, healthier, more comfortable homes.
The result of this combination of in-depth analysis and real-world homebuilding is a legacy of ultra high-quality, high-performance “green” homes and retrofits, with the centerpiece being the flagship home, Solar Harvest, the company’s widely-heralded verified zero net energy home.
Since 2006, Ecofutures has built 100% of our new homes following – and usually surpassing – federally-set standards for energy efficiency from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building Technology program, Builder’s Challenge, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s program for ENERGY STAR-Qualified Homes. Additionally, we retrofit all of our homes following the U.S. Green Building Council’s REGREEN Guidelines, which was authored in part by our founder & CEO.
Ecofutures serves customers – private, public, and professional – with the utmost integrity and personal care. Our building practices focus on designing buildings with the highest energy efficiency and interior health. Toward this end Ecofutures constantly strives to use the healthiest and most durable building and interior products available. Current trends call this building style “green”, and there are many who are jumping on the band-wagon with limited knowledge yet proclaiming their green orientation. To Ecofutures though, it is just sensible building, and a philosophy that has been practiced since inception some 17 years ago.
Our Future
In the near future, we will be exploring opportunities beyond building single homes: deep energy retrofits; scalable residential developments; technical advising on communities and neighborhoods; energy monitoring; and more. Our recently expanded management team and new Board of Advisors that includes Hunter Lovins and David Johnston will be key in coordinating with professional advisers on business strategy, securities compliance, and capital investment efforts to grow our business.
Our future, and the future of green building, grows and evolves by the day. To that end, 2010 will be the year of building strategic partnerships so Ecofutures can better serve our diverse customer base with complementary streams of expertise in designing and building or retrofitting a zero net energy home or building.
