Our motto is simple: “Build Tight, Ventilate Right, Reduce Indoor Emissions.” This motto was coined to convey our ultimate commitment to the health and comfort of our clients. From schematic design to finishing trim, we will work shoulder-to-shoulder with you to build a home for you that is as green and as zero net energy as you want it to be.
Pioneering Expertise
Our zero net energy (ZNE) homes are the first in the nation to achieve annual zero net energy usage by giving power back to the grid. You may be surprised to learn that we have been able to achieve this with just 5%‐10% more in building costs than a conventional home. Even more surprising to many is that our homes are “cash flow positive” from day one.
For example, by investing an extra $40,000 into energy‐saving and energy-producing materials on a 2,400 sq. ft. home, you will add about $280/month to a typical mortgage payment, but you will often save more than $300/month in heating and cooling bills.
As the cost of energy rises, the savings gap becomes even more prominent. In this way, the cost of ownership is not just lower, but more stable, than a conventional home. So building a home the Ecofutures way is just sensible, and demand is growing. But these are not the only reasons to build zero net energy. The combination of ever‐stricter energy codes, higher fossil fuel prices, and the need for real value, comfort and health are also major factors in the shift to green building.
Highest Standards in Craftsmanship and Energy Efficiency
Our flagship ZNE home, Solar Harvest, proved that building green was not only possible, but preferable. In Boulder, Colorado, Solar Harvest has been credited numerous times for the integration of wiser building codes that are now serving as a national model for higher efficiency standards. We continue to push the envelope by building 100% of our homes following – and usually surpassing – federally-set standards for energy efficiency from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building Technology program, Builder’s Challenge, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s program for ENERGY STAR-Qualified Homes. The Builder’s Challenge is based on HERS ratings – a projected and verified standard for energy efficiency. The Challenge requires that homes achieve a score of HERS 70 or below. As Colorado’s leading green home builder, our homes regularly score HERS 20 or below on all new homes, and in two homes have verified performance of HERS -3.
Solutions Across the Cost Spectrum
Ecofutures offers solutions for zero net energy (ZNE) and high-performance homes for a full range of budgets. Thanks to advances and innovation in the industry, we are now able to offer services beyond high-end custom homes. In 2009 we partnered with Solar Village Homes (SVH) to build turnkey energy‐efficient, near‐zero energy homes starting as low as $180,000 for a 1,200 SF home. SVH is a national design firm with 20 years experience in progressive, sustainable development, including a line of low‐cost, factory‐built zero energy homes. We have been invited to partner on SVH turnkey homes throughout Colorado.
As mentioned, the homes we build for our clients – whether it be turnkey or custom – go above and beyond national building standards to achieve the following:

The government-backed ENERGY STAR rating is an easy way to identify homes that are truly energy efficient. Build the house of your dreams and enjoy peace of mind knowing that it also meets strict efficiency standards set by the U.S. EPA.

Compared with standard construction, ENERGY STAR homes use substantially less energy and combined with renewable solar electric supply, these savings can create a very predictable, zero annual energy cost.
The super-insulated and tightly air-sealed nature of the foundation, roof, and walls of an energy efficient home protects you and your family against cold, heat, drafts, moisture, pollution and noise.

More and more homeowners are looking for energy efficient, comfortable, and healthy homes. By building a Energy Star home, you can be confident it will increase in value when it comes time to sell.

Did you know that your home can cause more pollution than your car? 17% of all greenhouse emissions are generated from the energy used in homes; the less energy we use, the less pollution we create.

The combination of non-toxic building materials and finishes with properly-specified ventilation systems will ensure a constant supply of fresh, healthy air for you and your family. For family members with sensitive respiratory systems or allergies, this is critically important to long term health.
