In 2008, Ecofutures
made a commitment to build 100% of
all of our new homes to meet standards set by the U.S. Department of
Energy's Building Technology Program Builder's Challenge.
The Builder's Challenge is based on HERS ratings - a
projected and verified standard for energy efficiency. The Challenge requires
that homes achieve a score of HERS 70 or below. That is 15
HERS points less than Energy Star standards, but still 50 more points
that we are used to achieving. As Boulder's leading net-zero
energy home builder, Ecofutures Building regularly scores HERS 20 or
below on all new homes, and have verified performance of HERS 0.

In 2006 Ecofutures became one of three Boulder
construction
companies to make the commitment to build 100% of our homes as Energy
Star-qualified
homes. Energy Star homes meet strict guidelines for
energy efficiency set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by
including a variety of energy-efficient
features in their
construction.
Many of Ecofutures homes go above and beyond Energy Star
standards by using healthier building materials, products with the best
available insulative value, the most advanced building science
practices for air tightness, and mechanical equipment based around
harvesting solar power.

Energy Star qualified
homes provide:

 |
- Peace of mind - the
government-backed Energy Star rating is an easy way to identify homes
that are truly energy efficient. Build the house of your
dreams and enjoy peace of mind knowing that it also meets strict
efficiency standards set by the U.S. EPA.
- Lower Ownership Cost -
compared with standard construction, Energy Star homes use
substantially less energy and combined with renewable solar electric
supply, these savings can create a zero annual energy cost.
- Better Performance -
energy efficient improvements protect you and your family against cold,
heat, drafts, moisture, pollution and noise.
- Smart Investment - more
and more homeowners are looking for energy efficient, comfortable, and
healthy homes. By building a Energy Star home, you can be
confident it will increase in value when it comes time to sell.
- Environmental protection -
Did you know that your home can cause more pollution than
your car? 17% of all greenhouse emissions are generated from
the energy used in homes; the less energy we use,
the less pollution we create.

The city of Fort Collins put together a
great website for
new home buyers and builders. It is the best high
performance home package that we have found to date. We offer
it in hard copy to new clients, and recommend that you read over some
of the fact sheets to learn key elements affecting home performance.
